Enlightenment, Daylight and Vienna

Last week, I read in the paper that Henry Heller, a democratic Maryland lawmaker, was calling for a state ban on marriages between first cousins who he said were, "playing genetic roulette" with their kids. He said that he wants to bring Maryland, "into the enlightened world of other states such as West Virginia and Arkansas" that prohibit these kinds of marriages. There are two ways to take this comment, neither of which are good. Either:
  1.  He picked horrible examples: With 24 states that prohibit first cousins getting married, wouldn't you pick 2 other states as examples? West Virginia and Arkansas are not the first states I think of as enlightened or progressive.
  2. He was being sarcastic and is slamming both of these wonderful states. I'd be really mad if I was the governor of either of them.
I love the Costco Connection magazine that comes each month. I may be the only one (other than my friend Gina) but I love reading about new small companies and new products. What can I say, I'm a dork.

Anyone else watch the Bachelor last night? Don't judge me, I like reality TV.
But really- He picked Vienna???????? What an idiot. I'm so mad and I feel so badly for Jake's family. It was so obvious that they LOVED Tenley and were luke warm about Vienna. The show had to do some quick editing to make it look like they came around, to like them both equally, but we know the truth.  What a waste of a season!

I'm so glad that the days are getting longer.  March is one of our snowiest months here in Colorado but at least it feels like spring is coming.

Daylight Saving Time starts in 2 weeks, on March 14th. It starts a week later this year and ends a week later in Nov. I love the longer evenings it's that losing an hour of sleep I'm not a fan of.
Did you know that DST actually started in Germany? Germany and it's allies began DST, in April, 1916 during WWI, as a way to conserve coal during wartime? Great Britain, its allies and many other European's started soon after that.  The United States didn't adopted it until 1918. It's had many revisions over the years and still hanging in there.

I've been trying to figure out what to put into some guest bags for family and friends at the hotel we're staying at for my daughter's wedding in April. The wedding is in Seattle so I want to put some things in that represent Washington state but, I don't want to spend a fortune on them. Any ideas?

Personally I wish they would pick a time and stay with it. I hate the time change. It really messes with our schedules. Just pick a time and stay with it already. We spend more time on day light savings so just stick with it.

My daughter and I are disappointed and shocked that Jake picked Vienna too. He and Tenley seemed perfect for one another and it even seemed like his face lit up when he looked at her. From what he said about his past relationships...it seems like he's just repeating the same pattern again. So sad. I hope Tenley finds someone that is super awesome and appreciates what a great girl she is.

Love the Costco Connection!
My husband's parents are first cousins, true story. But all their kids are fine and smart. Except one. But we don't talk about him. :-) Just kidding. They're all smart and handsome and have all their appendages, all four of the brothers! :-)

Guest bags - cupcakes, donuts, cookies and ice cold coke. I'm just sayin'

Hi Margaret,
Today finally felt like spring, hooray!
It was 45 degrees(or more) in Long Island. I felt spring. I'm so glad the days are getting longer too :))

I'm from WV so I'll go with #2. It's perfectly ok for someone who lives there to insult the state but a big no-no for everyone else.

I read Costco Connection cover to cover every month. I'm suprised that Maryland is just starting to talk about banning marriages between first cousins.
I'm from the Seattle area. The weather at that time of year can be super unpredictable. You could make a Seattle survival bag, include a cheap rain poncho, a Starbucks gift card, some Frango chocolates, pocket warmers maybe. It has snowed as late as April here...

I love the Costco Connection! You are not the only dork out there. :)

Have to agree with you on The Bachelor and his choice. It's obvious which head was making the decision.

You can get some inexpensive Washington wines when you purchase them by the case. We are also famous for hops and cherries. Perhaps some Chukar Cherries? http://www.chukar.com/
